Each morning’s hope and every evening’s grief.

I had wrapped you round, like a blanket; now

I offer that blanket to the rising flames,

To live naked in the world you chose to leave.

I offer a memory: of a time

When you opened a door, and blinked long,

And smiled slowly, a spreading radiance.

In the pyre the heat touches that smile,

Makes it incandescent, sears it away

In the gestures of the dancing fire.
